Nothing strikes me so much in life‘s great sorrows and trials as the deep humanity of the Scriptures and of Him, of whom the Scriptures testify. Hymns and most human compositions of a devout kind breathe far too pure and difficult kind of air; they rise to far too sunny and unclouded heights for my struggling soul to breathe and live in. It is only in the Divine Book that I find the deep, human cry; only in the Psalms of David and in the Word make flesh do I find what suits my struggling humanity.
