The Wisdom of James A. Stewart

Remember, repentance in which there is no faith is no true repentance and a faith in which there is no repentance is not true faith.

It is clear that the faith by which the sinner believes to the saving of the soul must be more than the acceptance or confession of certain redemptive truths. The sinner must receive Christ as LORD and then as SAVIOUR. I agree that the seeking soul will not fully understand all the implications of the Lordship of Christ, but I still maintain that unless the guilty sinner lays down his arms of rebellion and bows to King Jesus, he never will be saved.

It is essential that we do not omit the proclamation of the sovereignty of the risen Lord, which is the dominating principle forming the background of every true evangelistic appeal.

Only by the miracle of regeneration and a transformed life is a man able to call Jesus the Lord.

Since His ascension His official title is “the Lord Jesus Christ.” “God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:36). This is the official royal proclamation from Heaven: “Him hath God exalted … to be a Prince and a Saviour” (Acts 5:31).

It is striking to notice that the Lordship of Christ is never divorced from His Saviourhood. Wherever He is presented to us in the pages of the New Testament as our precious Saviour, He is also mentioned as God’s Anointed One.

The task which lies before us is great, the need appalling, and the opportunities tremendous. It would be presumption to dare to go forward except on our knees. It would be audacity if we did not definitely believe in the blessed ministry of the Holy Spirit to endue us with the power of Pentecost. Let none of us think that the work of evangelizing Europe will be an easy one. It will not be merely waving a spiritual magic wand and shouting “Hallelujah!” It will take more than a few meetings to accomplish this God-given task, even though thousands attend them daily. It will mean blood, sweat and tears, all along the way. There will always be the opposition with the opportunity, as Paul says, “For a great door and effectual is open … and there are many adversaries” (1 Cor. 16:9). All the powers of hell will seek to hinder.
