The Wisdom of Bunyan from the Pilgrim’s Progress, Pt 2

Concerning the work of the Holy Spirit in revealing truth and bringing true experience of the gospel in the life of every Christian —

This parlor, said the Interpreter, is the heart of a man who was never sanctified by the sweet grace of the gospel. The dust is his original sin and inward corruptions that have defiled the whole man. He that began to sweep at first is the law. But she that brought water and sprinkled it is the gospel . . . . You saw the young woman sprinkle the room with water, upon which it was cleansed with pleasure. This is to show you that when the sweet and precious influence of the gospel comes into the heart, then sin in vanquished and subdued, and the soul is made clean and, consequently, fit for the King of Glory to inhabit.

Concerning Christian fellowship — Let us, if perhaps we may better ourselves, talk with you of all things that have happened to you in your pilgrimage.

Concerning Christian fellowship — All their talk at the table was about the Lord of the Hill, namely about what He had done and why He did what He did.

Concerning the love of Christ — He is such a lover of poor pilgrims that the like is not to be found from the East to the West.

Concerning true saving faith and the change of heart a believer has in regeneration —

I count that the Prince, under whose banner I now stand, is able to absolve me, yea, and to pardon, and besides, I like His service, His wages, His servants, government, company, and His country.

Concerning true perseverance to the end of life and full assurance of faith —

Then said he, ’I am going to my Father’s; and though with great difficulty I have gotten hither, yet now I do not regret all the trouble I have had to arrive where I am. My marks and scars I carry with me, to be a witness for me that I have fought His battles who now will be my rewarder.’…. So he passed over, and all the trumpets sounded for him on the other side.
